The Awards Commission administers the awards of the Federation
and has the responsibility of receiving and processing award nominations.
The Commission supports the President of the day plus two past Presidents
in their deliberations.
Awards
EDIE SMITH AWARD
For outstanding service to Australian Speleology. Awarded biennially
at the ASF Conference.
The Edie Smith Award perpetuates the memory of Edie Smith who was
a distinguished pioneer of Australian Speleology, a Life Member
of the Tasmanian Caverneers Club and the first female President
of an Australian speleological society, the Canberra Speleological
Society.
FELLOWSHIP OF THE AUSTRALIAN SPELEOLOGICAL FEDERATION
For outstanding service specifically to the Federation. Awarded
biennially at the ASF Conference.
CERTIFICATE OF MERIT
For specific contributions to the exploration, scientific study,
conservation or documentation of caves. Awarded annually at the
ASF Conference or Council Meeting.
NOMINATIONS: In writing, to the Awards Commission, containing the
details outlined in the criterion below.
Special Awards
AUSTRALASIAN CAVELIFE AWARD (ACA)
A biennial photographic competition which encourages an interest
in bieospeleology and an awareness of cave ecology.
The entries are displayed and judged at the biennial ASF Conference.
Sponsor: Cavelife
Prize: $100 Cash
ENTRY: Nominations are made to the ASF Conference Organisers and
must be lodged by the closing date set by the organisers but usually
before Noon on the first day of the Conference. See criterion below.
CAVING EQUIPMENT AWARD FOR PUBLISHED EXCELLENCE
To help promote the production and publication of material which
will be of benefit to Australian cavers. The award has two categories

Prize: Each category winner will receive a Gift Voucher to the value
of $50.
ENTRY: Nominations are made to the ASF Conference Organisers and

Edie Smith and Fellowship Awards

Criterion:

Outstanding service over a long period of time (say at least
ten years) in any field of speleology.

Frequency:
|
Biennially, announced in conjunction with the biennial conference
|

Nomination & Selection:
|
Nominations will be called for at least 16 months before
each conference. The Awards Commission need not restrict itself
to nominations received, nor is it required to make an award
in any particular biennium.

|
Award Form:
|
For the Edie Smith - an item of real permanent value, possibly
chosen in discussion with the awardee.
|
|
Background:
|
The Edie Smith Award was established by resolution of the
January, 1968 meeting of the Federation to perpetuate the
memory of Edie Smith and to give recognition to those who
have made outstanding contribution to Australian Speleology.
Edie Smith was a distinguished pioneer of Australian Speleology,
a life member of the Tasmanian Caverneers Club and the first
woman president of an Australian Speleogical society, the
Canberra Speleological Society.

Certificate of Merit of the ASF

Criterion:
|
For specific contribution to the exploration, scientific
study, conservation or documentation of caves, including the
roles of leadership, administration, publication and the development
of new techniques and equipment.

Frequency:
|
Annual, announced in conjunction with the biennial conference
or Council Meeting
|
|
Nomination & Selection:
|
Nominations will be received by the Awards Commission before
the 30th June each year. The Awards Commission need not restrict
itself to nominations received, nor is it restricted in the
number of awards which may be made in any one year.

|
Award Form:
|
A printed Certificate of Merit, together with a citation.
|
Australasian Cavelife Award (ACA)
|
Criterion:
|
The subject of the photograph may be any form of cave fauna
or flora on a worldwide basis. Microscopic laboratory shots
may be submitted.

Frequency:
|
Biennially, judged in conjunction with the biennial conference.
Conference organisers should contact the donor regarding the
procedures associated with the award.
|
|
Nomination & Selection:
|
Entries must not have entered in a previous ACA. The number
of entries must not exceed three per person. Entries must
be in 35mm transparency format. Entries must be received before
a closing date set by the organisers, but usually before noon
on the first day of the conference. If none of the submitted
entries are, in the opinion of the judge(s), of a satisfactory
standard no award will be made and the prize money will be
accumulated until the next ACA.

Award Form:

The winning entry judged to be of outstanding biospeleological
interest and/or photographic excellence will be awarded a
cash prize of $100.

Caving Equipment Awards for Published Excellence
|
Criterion:
|
The work must be that of a member of an ASF Incorporated
Member society or participating Associate. It must have been
produced in a form which permitted wide dissemination. The
definition of "published" is at the discretion of the judges.

Frequency:
|
Biennially, announced in conjunction with the biennial conference
by the Awards Commission or its nominee. Conference organisers
should contact the donor regarding the procedures associated
with the award.

Nomination & Selection:
|
Items nominated must have been published in the two years
prior to the award being made. There is no limit to the number
of entries per person. Nominations must be received before
a closing date set by the organisers, but usually before noon
on the first day of the conference. If none of the submitted
nominations are, in the opinion of the judge(s) of a satisfactory
standard, no award will be made. The criteria used in making
the selection are determined from time to time by the Awards
Commission or its nominee. The sponsor is in no way a judge
for these awards.
